Musical Improv Level 1

Over 6 sessions, Musical Improv Level 1 will introduce you to the world of musical improv through exercises, games, and scene work. We will learn the basics of how to improvise melody and lyrics of a song and how to apply these elements within a scene. We will start to practice creating music within song structures that will make you look like a magician on stage. You will walk away from this course with the initial training necessary for long form musical improv competency which is also the prerequisite to further your study of improvising a full length musical (a.k.a. a musical narrative or long form musical). No grad show.

Prerequisite: Musical Fun Times and permission from the instructor. Priority spots reserved for students who have most recently completed Musical Fun Times.

This workshop with award winning comedian Kirsten Rasmussen will be a gym session for any improviser hoping to improve their scene work. The beginnings of scenes hold all the info we need to make a scene successful. In this workshop you’ll drill scene starts, practising the three things that make scene starts sing – physicality, emotionality and point of view. Helpful for anyone working in short form, long form or musical improv- your scene starts are where the whole show begins.

Please note: There are two options for this class: either to learn by doing (play) or to learn by watching (audit). If you are playing, please note there will be students who are auditing while you are working. No audio/visual recordings will be allowed.
